Release Day Blitz + review… 4 stars for One Careful Owner by Jane Harvey-Berrick

*** ARC kindly provided by Ardent Prose in exchange for an honest review. ***

one-careful-ownerHeartbreaking and beautiful.  Two words to describe this story…
Alex lost everything … his family, his wife, his best friend and his company.  Together with his dog Stan he starts a new life which isn’t easy when your past hurt you badly and caused you to have a stutter.  He tries to avoid human contact and is satisfied with his life with Stan even if he is lonely.  When Stan needs a vet he is immediately captivated by Dawn.  Dawn has a sweet little 8-year old daughter Katie.  The father of her daughter was the cause of a fight with her sister.  She doesn’t trust easily anymore since she has Katie to think about.  But slowly Alex finds his way into her heart.

I loved the beautiful story and even though I never thought I would enjoy it, I did enjoy the small parts with the POV of Stan.  Just wonderful!  And what a lovely girl Katie was.  She didn’t only steal Alex’s heart but also mine.

This was my first book by Jane Harvey-Berrick but I’m looking forward to read more from this author.  I already bought Slave to the Rhythm …

Take me, all of me, broken and in pieces, or say to hell with me.”

WARNING!
This book will break your heart!
From the best-selling romance author of THE EDUCATION OF SEBASTIAN comes a sexy, heart-breaking and heart-warming story about one man and his dog. (Standalone)

Alex is lost and alone, with only his dog, Stan for company. He doesn’t expect kindness from anyone anymore, but sometimes hope can be found in the most unlikely places. He has a second chance at happiness, but there’s a dark side to Alex, and a reason that more than one person has called him crazy.
Single mother Dawn is doing just fine. Except that her ex- is a pain in the ass, her sister isn’t speaking to her, and her love life is on the endangered list.
At least her job as a veterinarian is going well. Until a crazy-looking guy arrives at her office accompanied by an aging dog with toothache. Or maybe Alex Winters isn’t so crazy after all, just … different.
Dawn realizes that she’s treated him the same way that all the gossips in town have treated her—people can be very cruel.

Contains scenes of an adult nature.

This is a standalone novel with no cliff-hanger.

He still reminded me of a Mountain Man, and he appeared to be wearing the clothes that I’d thought were rags. His long, shaggy brown hair and thick beard hid most of his face. A shudder of apprehension ran through me.
He seemed just as ill at ease as he had been by the lake, his eyes darting around restlessly, but then he walked around to the passenger door and I lost sight of him.
When he reappeared, he was carrying a large dog, one that easily weighed 80 or 90 pounds. He must have been strong because he carried the weight easily. I recalled the thick slabs of muscle that sculpted his chest and arms when I’d seen him earlier. Yes, there was no doubt that he was strong, but as he held his pet, his hands were gentle.
I watched his chin bob, and I realized that he was talking to his dog.
Carefully, he set the animal on the ground and fixed a leash around its neck.
The dog immediately sat down and refused to budge. His coat was thick and looked glossy and healthy, his muzzle starting to gray. I guessed he was part retriever, part mastiff—large and solid. And heavy.
Ashley giggled as the man tugged on the leash, but the dog still wouldn’t move. The man stood still, looking at his pet, his hands on his hips, then he shook his head in defeat. Bending down, he scooped up the dog again and shouldered his way through the door into the office.
Now he was closer, I could study him in more detail.
His hair was a tangle of light brown with sun-blond lights, still uncombed, an off-putting mess of wild, crazy curls. His clothes were even worse now I could see him wearing them, unkempt and torn as if he’d given up, but they were clean. And when he stopped in front of Ashley, I caught the faint scent of soap and laundry detergent—no cologne. This man was a paradox.
Ashley smiled tightly from her position behind the reception desk.
“Mr. Winters and Stan, is that right?”
He nodded but didn’t speak, still holding his dog in his arms. His face was grim, as if he’d never smiled, never thought of smiling.
So this was the man who’d bought Old Joe’s place? I immediately felt guilty that I’d assumed he was trespassing and camping illegally. I didn’t know that somebody had already moved into the property. Technically, I’d been the interloper this morning. I felt like such a judgmental bitch. But he’d really scared me, and I hadn’t been thinking clearly.
“I’m so sorry,” Ashley said with fake sweetness, “but Dr. Petz, our male veterinarian, had to go out on an emergency visit. Dr. Andrews over there is available.”
He turned to stare at me and his body stiffened. I saw a flicker of recognition in his eyes before he dropped his gaze to the floor again. I thought for sure that he’d turn and walk out, but then he glanced at his dog and I saw the expression soften in his curious golden-brown eyes as he peered up at me and nodded slowly.
“Great!” said Ashley, her gaze glancing across to me. “I’ve got basic information from your email, but if you could just fill out this form and…”
“Maybe you’d like to bring Stan into the examination room, Mr. Winters,” I interrupted quickly. “He looks rather heavy.”
The man blinked twice, but carried the dog inside without commenting or even looking at Ashley.
“Rude!” Ashley said, not quietly enough, and although I agreed, I shot her a look and took the form from her.
She leaned toward me, her eyes wide as her voice dropped to an urgent whisper.
“I’ll keep my ears open, Dawn. He looks kind of weird. You know, serial killer weird.”
I pressed my lips together and followed my new client.

5 stars for “Me Before You – 01 – Me Before You” by Jojo Moyes

Me Before You AudibleIf you want to read a wonderful written, heartbreaking romance… This is the one for you! This was my first book by Jojo Moyes and I’d love to read more!
Besides a great book it also gives you insight in the life of a person who is quadriplegic and the people around him/her.

I listened to the audible. Usually it takes me some time to finish an Audible but I just couldn’t wait. I needed more and more which says a lot I guess 😉

Now the movie is left. One thing is sure, I’ll need tissues… Me Before You movie

Small spoiler in this last part … I will never read the next book. I loved this one, loved the author’s writing but I will never read about Lou with another man 😦

3+ stars for “The McKinney Brothers – 03 – Worth It All by Claudia Connor”

*** ARC kindly provided by the publisher Random House Publishing Group – Loveswept, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. ***

Worth It AllThis was a lovely, sweet romance about a man being eaten by guillt for the last 8 years. A man feeling like he doesn’t deserve love and a family. But what happens when he meets a sweet little girl and her mom? A hardworking, dedicated mom with a big heart. A little girl missing a leg, just like him. It doesn’t take long for him to fall for Casey and her mother Paige. Can he convince Paige to believe in the fairy tale?

Even though I usually need something more in books I really did enjoy this one and look forward to reading the previous books in this series because all the characters I met of this family are just great!!

I’m not a big fan of insta-love but for a sweet romance like this it works. I give it 3.5 stars.

4 stars for “Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan”

coverBefore I started this book I had a feeling I could use one to make my cry big, fat, ugly tears … What I remembered from reviews on this one, this would be the one but … I guess I’m weird because I didn’t cry! Well that’s a lie … when Norm told Bree in his own way while eating pie that he loved her I had 1 tear rolling on my cheek. And when I thought Archer (spoiler) was dead 2 more until I realized soon he wasn’t. That was it …

BUT I did really enjoy this one. It is a well written story how fate brought two broken people together!! I’m not going to write down what happens. There are already so many amazing reviews on this book …

I loved Archer… Sweet, broken, silent, gentle, thoughtful, shy Archer broke and stole my heart. I really how the author shaped his character and how he grew.

4 stars for “The Vixen and the Vet by Katy Regnery”

The Vixen and the VetWhich girl doesn’t like Fairy Tales?? I’m not a little girl anymore but I still love them and Beauty & the Beast is one of my favourites…

This version is a well written, heart-breaking version! I loved every single page of it and even though there was humiliation, betrayal and heartbreak the Vixen and the Vet got their HEA just like it should in a Fairy Tale!

After losing his hand and severe damage to his face and leg, Asher Lee returns home but doesn’t get the homecoming he deserves! All he has wanted for years is his privacy. Living a hermitlike existence he fills his lonely days reading. When strong, driven and brave Savannah enters his life he finally starts feeling whole again… However when she makes some bad choices and has to choose between her heart or her career they might lose everything that matters …

I loved this book so much and am looking forward to read more books from Katy Regnery!

“And I’ll tell you something else. I’m not worried that you’ll find someone else, because there isn’t anyone else on the face of the earth who could ever love you as much as I do. It’s impossible because no man has ever loved a woman as much as I love you. And I’m not worried about me finding someone else, because you brought me back from the dead and gave me a second chance at life. You’re my miracle, Savannah, and I will always belong to you.”

4 stars for “On the Ropes – 01 – Fighting Silence by Aly Martinez”

RFighting Silenceecently I saw a lot of great reviews on “The Fall Up” which isn’t available to buy yet so I wanted to read another book from this author first. Thanks Christy for suggesting to start with this one, I loved it. I’m sure there are more than 1 Christy on GoodReads but I guess she’ll know it’s her… I was intrigued and who doesn’t like a hot, strong boxer?

One thing that I was a bit afraid of was the indication of College in the shelve list on Goodreads. I try to prevent books with characters still in school because it’s more difficult to relate with them. God now I feel really old 😉 But fortunately this was not an big issue with this book.

I really loved this well written, beautiful but sad story about Eliza and her soulmate Till. Their first encounter was at 13, they both had a hard life growing up and with some struggles on the way they grew up to 2 wonderful, strong, caring people! I won’t tell more about this story. You can read it in the description of the author or even better buy the book and read it …

There are 2 smalls things that bothered me a little about this book. The first is the time gaps in the story. It felt like pieces of the story were missing/rushed. And the second is that I like a little bit suspense in my books. It took until 89% before there was suspense. But still an enjoyable book!

I loved most of the side characters but especially Flint and Quarry and will definitely read their books, hopefully soon but first I need to get my TBR list reduced!
