I dig. It’s what I do. I’ll literally use a shovel to answer a question. Some answers, though, have been buried too deep for too long. But I’ll find those, too. And I know where to dig—the Blackwood Estate on the edge of the Mississippi Delta. Garrett Blackwood is the only thing standing between me and the truth. A broken man—one with desires that dance in the darkest part of my soul—he’s either my savior or my enemy. I’ll dig until I find all his secrets. Then I’ll run so he never finds mine. The only problem? He likes it when I run.

Author’s Note: This is a mystery/suspense romance with violence and explicit sex. Trigger warning.

CHAPTER ONE

The grand house rose from the ground as if it grew in that one spot, nurtured for years by the sun and rain. Trees encroached from all sides, their branches leaning toward it, as if seeking to gain some of the same sun and air. Despite time and neglect, the building remained strong, the corners sharp and the roofs perfectly angled. Whoever had built the Victorian masterpiece in the woods had done so with painstaking precision. It was meant to last.

The Blackwood Estate was the last stop on my survey, and I intended to get permission to search the extensive grounds and do a few digs. Acres and acres of woods, unused farmland, and various creeks and river branches would provide months—if not years—of interest. But my main focus at that moment was the immense home hidden in the dark forest.

I’d pushed the main gate open, the hinges screeching in disrepair. The driveway was mostly clear, the cracks in the concrete streaking like dark lightning. I’d rolled steadily forward, eyeing the gentle hills and wondering what archaeological treasures lay buried beneath the fertile Mississippi Delta dirt.

At the end of the drive, I’d found the faded mansion, vines growing along the sides and a front porch swing rocking in the breeze. Despite its strong bones, time had worn away much of the home’s superficial beauty—the gray and white paint peeled, dark green shutters along the first floor hung askew, and the windows carried a film of dirt, making it hard to tell if someone lurked inside, watching.

A shiver ran through me at the prospect. Slowing, I took in the house’s worn façade and maneuvered around a fallen limb. I eyed the second floor windows, but nothing moved. It was as if the house was holding its breath, waiting for something. For me?

I drove to the side of the structure, the driveway continuing further into the dark property. Gathering my notepad, I climbed out of the car and took the full brunt of the winter wind. Fall had come and gone, leaves littering the ground and crunching beneath my feet. A surprisingly cold winter had followed in its wake, the low temperatures often the first subject of any conversation I’d had with the locals.

The sun flirted with the tops of the trees to my left, throwing dappled shadows against the turret that rose three stories along the side of the house. A weather vane sat atop it, though it seemed frozen, the direction signifying nothing.

Pulling my red pea coat closed, I climbed the front steps and knocked on the dark brown front door with as much authority as I could muster. The wood was too thick and seemed to absorb the sound from my knuckles so that only someone standing right next to it would even hear it.

“Hello?” I banged on the door with the side of my fist. A solid thunk of flesh on wood was my only reward.

I glanced around for a doorbell or a knocker. Nothing.

The wind picked up again, whistling along the eaves of the house like an unruly ghost.

I swore under my breath and knocked again. “Is anyone home? I’m Elise Vale from the university. I just have a few questions.”

No luck. The house remained silent, watching me. Turning, I walked along the front porch, past the rusted swing, and to a set of dusty windows. I bent over to peek inside.

The interior was so dark that what little sunlight filtered through the surrounding trees was still too much. The gold reflection blinded more than it illuminated. I dropped my note pad onto the swing and cupped my hands on the chilly glass to peer inside.

When I saw a face only inches away from mine, I shrieked and stumbled backwards, falling on my ass with a thump.

Review & Release Day Blitz – 4 stars for Blackwood by Celia Aaron

*** ARC kindly provided by Ardent Prose in exchange for an honest review. ***

blackwoodElise needs answers!  She lost her mother to cancer and now she needs to know what happened to her father.  She’s sure he’s dead too and the answer can be found on the Blackwood grounds.  The hot, brooding owner didn’t give her permission but that doesn’t stop her.  Until she gets attacked by boars and has to depend on that same man to heal her.  But there is more that gets healed.  Garrett is broken and became a recluse.  But when ‘Red’ knocks on his door he wants to be the big bad wolf to ‘hurt’ her but he wants to save her from his proclivities.  Will Elise find the answers she needs?  Will Garrett be able to keep his hands of her?  Will Elise stop him?  Will she get devoured by him?

Read this wonderful, dark, erotic romance to get the answers.  I loved every second of this suspenseful, well written story.  The chemistry between them … H.O.T.!!  Both characters are strong and amazing.

What I did miss was an epilogue.  I would have loved to have had a look in their future.  I also wouldn’t mind a book on Garrett’s brother Hart.

A short warning.  There might be some triggers in this story … breath play, consensual non-consent.

Before I forget to mention this… I loved the cover!  The perfect Garrett … another reason to read the book 😉

This reminds me I still have to finish the Acquisition series… another great dark book by Celia Aaron.

“You can’t keep me here,” I said with far more bravado than I felt. “I refuse to be held prisoner by a psycho in need of a shower and shave.”

He laughed, this time the sound rich and sultry. It reverberated inside my chest. Something about it reminded me of the forest, the way the sunrise warmed it but couldn’t quite reach its dark heart.

“You don’t like my beard?” He sat next to me, much closer this time.

My pulse ratcheted up, and I took in a quick breath.

“Well?” He grinned and took my wrist.

I tried to pull it away, but his grip was like an iron shackle. He eased the back of my hand down his cheek. “Not so bad, is it?”

It wasn’t. Not exactly soft, it felt thick and masculine. Rich. “What are you doing?” I leaned back until I pressed up against the headboard.

He moved closer, his woodsy scent a mix of smoke and soap. Maybe he didn’t need a shower after all. I didn’t turn away, not even when his lips were only inches from mine.

“I just wanted to see.” His eyes flickered to my lips.

“You’re about to see what a vicious head butt looks like.” My rapid pulse infected my voice, making it quaver.

“Yeah?” He squeezed my wrist harder. “I don’t believe you.”

“Fuck you.” I stared into his eyes, searching the stormy irises for some way to solve the enigma of Garrett Blackwood.

He smirked again, just the slightest quirk of his lips, then leaned back and released my wrist. The air cooled between us, and goose bumps rose along my bare arms.

4 stars for “Cartel – 03 – Empire” by Lili St Germain

*** ARC kindly provided by the publisher HarperCollins Publishers Australia, via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. ***

empireIn the first 2 books I didn’t really knew if I should hate or love Dornan but now … I really hate him and it hurts because more than once he showed that he can be good, he has a conscience, …

Love and hate … there is such a thin line between them!  Poor Marianna!  How much can a woman suffer…  She is such a strong woman and deserved happiness

What I did like about this book but what is often too much in other books is the multiple POV … For this book it worked because it really helped to find out what all main characters were thinking.

I loved this dark conclusion of the Cartel series and would love to read more from this author.  I loved her Gypsy Brothers series.  I still have to read the last book in that series and am really looking forward to it.  This author knows how to write dark, captivating books!

Be warned this book doesn’t have a real HEA and even though I knew what was going to happen I was crying so much…  Heartbreaking!!

About the Author

pepper-winters-1Pepper Winters wears many roles. Some of them include writer, reader, sometimes wife. She loves dark, taboo stories that twist with your head. The more tortured the hero, the better, and she constantly thinks up ways to break and fix her characters. Oh, and sex… her books have sex.

She loves to travel and has an amazing, fabulous hubby who puts up with her love affair with her book boyfriends.

My review

*** ARC kindly provided by TRSOR Promotions in exchange for an honest review. ***

dollarsI already loved several books from this author and this series is another winner.  I really loved the first installment and it’s the same with this one.  I loved reading this dark but hopeful romance.  We aren’t t there yet but I think Pim and Elder can heal each other if they give this a chance.

I loved how patient Elder was.  Pim has been through so much.  Instead of becoming a shell she fights and tries even though it is real hard.  Will she be able to thrust Elder enough to give him her voice?

I loved it and really look forward to the next installment.  Will Pim open up to Elder?  Will danger from Pim’s past show up?  What about Elder’s past?  So many questions…

I’m also glad this has a dual POV because I really do love to read Elder’s thoughts.

5 stars for “Dollar – 01 – Pennies” by Pepper Winters

*** Copy kindly provided by TRSOR Promotions in exchange for an honest review. ***

penniesI received this first installment of five in the Dollars series by Pepper Winters, from TRSOR promotions together with an ARC for part 2. These weren’t the first books I read from this amazing author. I also loved her Monsters in the dark series and Destroyed. She’s one of my favorite authors in the dark genre.

This series seems to become another winner. In this first book we learn about Pim’s dark past where she is owned by a ruthless, sick monster who bought her at a slave auction. During those two years she suffers enormously. How much can you endure? When is it too much? But then Elder crosses her path. Is he just like her master? He feels dangerous but also safe. Which one is he really? Will he save her or is he just as cruel?

Oh my … I was so glad I had the second installment waiting because I needed to know what would happen with Pim.

Please be warned, this is not a fairy tale. It’s very dark and disturbing but oh so well written. I also loved how strong Pim was. Maybe playing mute made her life harder but also so much stronger.

4,5 stars for “Scarred Souls – 03 – Ravage” by Tillie Cole

*** ARC kindly provided by the publisher St. Martin’s Press, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. ***

RavageRavage is the third book in the Scarred Souls series. I loved the first 2 books in this series and was so glad that I got an ARC for this one too.

In the second book we met little Zoya. She’s the little sister from Zaal and Anri. When Zaal and Anri were taken away to be drugged to be ruthless killers they thought their little sister was killed together with the rest of their family. Little Zoya has been injured seriously and has been hidden since by a loyal employee of their family. When she learns that Zaal is still alive and there is no more threat she can’t wait to go to him … But then she gets taken by a monster. A monster willing to do everything to get to Zaal. Until the monster starts to feel. After hating the Georgian woman who took him and turned him into a monster inside and outside 18 years ago he wants to hate all Georgians but this little Georgian woman gets under his skin. His mistress has taken him and his little sister Inessa from the orphanage. Valentin will do everything to keep his sister alive. Even though her situation remains horrible… Will Zaal be able to save Inessa? Will Valentin have to chose between Zoya or Inessa? What happens when Zaal finds out that Inessa is still alive?

This book felt a little bit less violent than the previous two books in this series. We get new loveable characters. I admired Zoya’s strength. I was glad to read more from Luka, Zaal and their wives.

This book gets 4,5 stars. I’m looking forward to read Inessa’s story which will be book 4.

5 stars for “Unyielding – 03 – Perfect Rage” by Nashoda Rose

*** ARC kindly provided by the author, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. ***

Perfect RageWow … Again wow! This is one of my favorite authors. She writes amazing, captivating stories full of suspense with wonderful characters. I loved her Tear Asunder and Unyielding series and hope there are many more books to come.

After reading Perfect Ruin (2nd book in the Unyielding series) I couldn’t wait for Connor’s book and it was so worth it!

As with the other books, you could read them as a standalone but I really suggest you read them all, in order.

As for this book, Perfect Rage… When Connor and Alina met in 2005 they were immediately attracted to each other and spent some great moments together. Until Carlos Moreno forces her to go to him. She leaves a message for Connor which breaks his heart. If only he knew …

Now many years later, after being rescued from Carlos, Alina is trying to make a life again and didn’t think she would see Connor again. But Connor isn’t the same man anymore. The drugs and torture Carlos forced on him made him a cruel, hard, dangerous and unpredictable man full of rage. He wants Alina desperately but he won’t endanger her and leaves her again and again … He doesn’t see it as running but as surviving! Will he stop running?

I loved reading about the previous characters too! I don’t see if there will be another book in this series but if there is I would love a book about Vic Gate or maybe even Deaglan…

4 stars for “The Bad Ones by Stylo Fantome”

*** ARC kindly provided by the author, via Shh Moms Reading, in exchange for an honest review. ***
The Bad OnesSo far I have read most of Stylo’s books and loved them all!!  The Kane Trilogy was my first read and after that trilogy each read was better than the previous.  They are all different and wonderful but I had a hard time rating this one.  I also needed some time to review this one and eventually deleted it and started over.
I’m not going to tell about the story since I would probably reveal to much.  It is a unique dark and twisted story and I COULDN’T PUT IT DOWN!  I loved it but I can’t really love the main characters.  I usually really need to like the main characters to love a book and in this case I really didn’t like them but I still love the book … Does that make sense??
I’m looking forward to read more from this author.  I’m so curious what will be next?  I already have Out Of Plans waiting for some time on my Kindle now and hope to read it soon…

Synopsis

Love isn’t always bright and

shiny.

Sometimes, it’s dirty and wrong, buried six feet deep in a secret place

where only wild things dare to go. Hidden behind a big black curtain that covers things no one should

ever see.

Sometimes it happens between two people who should never be allowed

to come together. One who is a match, and the other who just happens to be gasoline.

One strike is all it takes to burn the whole world down, and that’s exactly

what they plan on doing.

Even if it kills them.

warning: this book contains graphic sex, extremely brutal

Excerpt

Con finally unlocked the doors and she hefted herself into the massive vehicle. They sat in silence for a

while, their breath fogging up the glass. Then he opened his mouth.

“Did he touch you?”

Dulcie knew he wasn’t asking about the homeless man.

“Not in any way that counts,” she replied, turning to look at him. His hands had moved to grip the

steering wheel.

“So he has touched you.”

“Jared was just an experiment, I wanted to see if -”

“You let him fucking touch you.”

You fucking left me!” she was suddenly screaming. He didn’t even flinch, just gripped the

steering wheel harder. “You fucking left me in this fucking town, without a goddamn goodbye! Without

a goddamn word! God, you have no idea what it’s been like. That fucking camera, all those

drawings. And there’s all these people, and talking, and feeling this way, and all the blackness, and I

don’t even know what’s wrong with me, and nothing. You come back, and it’s like

nothing to you. Oh hey, Dulcie. Where’s your sketchbook, Dulcie. Come to a party, Dulcie.

Let me just fuck this chick in the woods, Dulcie. So you know what? Yeah, he fucking touched me. I let

him fucking touch me. And I hated every minute of it, and I would pretend it was you, and I would hate

you, and I would hate myself, and I just let it happen.

Con lunged across the seat, and absurdly, her first thought was “wow, he’s really fast

before his fingers wrapped around her throat. She wasn’t fazed, though, and she pushed right back,

slapping him across the face. This only caused him to clench both hands around her neck and he yanked

her forward, dragging her to him so their faces were only inches apart.

“Stupid little Dulcie,” he whispered, his breath hot against her lips. She held onto his wrists and glared at

him, but didn’t try to pull away. His fingers got tighter. “So scared of the big bad wolf.”

“I’m not … scared of you,” she managed to gasp out, but then his grip grew so tight he completely cut off

her oxygen.

“Of course you aren’t scared of me. I’m not the wolf. You are.”

So that’s what was hiding behind the curtain. I wish you’d told me sooner, Con. We could’ve

reveled in our darkness together.

It felt like a weight was lifted off her back. She’d been pretending for so long, and she hadn’t even

realized it. Had conditioned herself to do it. It was easier to believe Con was the darkness, and she was

simply drawn to it. Basking in his wake. But it was all a lie – she was every bit as dark as him. They were

the same animal. She’d just been better at deceiving herself. And now they’d evolved into something

else, into a new, higher being.

Her lungs were throbbing, screaming for oxygen. She could feel her pulse pounding behind her face. Her

mouth was open, but she couldn’t make a sound. Black spots danced in front of her eyes, yet still they

stared at each other. Recognizing each other, maybe for the first time ever.

Maybe for the last time.

What a way to die, looking into the face of this beautiful boy. What a gift.

Crazy woman living in an undisclosed location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a

remind people of Lucille Ball – I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I

laugh a lot, I’m clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don’t trust anyone who

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

5 stars for “Scarred Souls – book 1 Raze & book 2 Reap by Tillie Cole”

*** ARC kindly provided by the publisher St. Martin’s Press, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. ***

Scarred SoulsThis review could be really short because the word “PERFECT!” would be sufficient! Wow! I really loved her Hades Hangmen series and I already read RAZE about a year ago and loved it too. So when this bundle showed on NetGalley I just had to request it!

So I read RAZE about a year ago and since I have read so many books but RAZE is a book that stays with you. I still remember so much about it! Initially I wanted to reread it but because of limited time I started REAP immediately.

RAZE and REAP are both wonderful books with great characters, a terrific story, wonderful descriptive parts, lots of suspense, chemistry, angst, darkness, strong main characters, …

I expected REAP to be the story of Zaal and Talia but I was so happy to find lots of Raze and Kisa in it! Yay! I’m really looking forward to the third book and hope that it’s about Zoya!

The only thing I would have loved different is a bigger epilogue in Reap so I hope to hear more about Luka, Zaal, Kisa and Talie in the third book “Ravage”. Let it soon be August 16 2016 =D

Another great book by Tillie Cole with a well deserved 5 stars!! Unforgettable!

4 stars for “Acquisition – 02 – Magnate by Celia Aaron”

*** Copy kindly provided by the author Celia Aaron, in exchange for an honest review. ***

Magnate by Celia AaronNo no no no … that Cliffhanger, I didn’t see that coming … no!!! I’m so sorry sweet Stella but I’m on Sinclair’s side now! He just has to do this and you’ll just have to survive … damn!

I loved this book even more than the first one. Stella has chosen Lucius as her owner and wants to go to the trials with him. Will Lucius still want this when Sinclair tells him the truth about what will have to be done? What will the brutal Christmas trials do to Stella? How will this affect the 3 brothers? I’m not telling more about this story since I don’t want to spoil anything…

In the first book I had huge problems with Sinclair but this book changed my mind. I still don’t really like Lucius but then there is sweet, young Teddy… I really adore that boy and hope he’ll get the chance to continue his rather ‘carefree’ life …

As for Stella … wow her strength and compassion for others! I really admire her for this. I also love the attraction between her and Sinclair.

I’m really looking forward to the third book and am so glad it’s planned for April 2016 🙂
