Miles Away by Addison KlineWhen I saw this book on NetGalley I immediately loved the cover and since I love a good mafia story the decision to request this one was easy. I hadn’t read anything from this author yet even though I already have the first two books in her ‘Breaking Black’ series on my Kindle.

This book brings us the story Miles and Letty. At 18 Miles has loved his Letty for 3 years already. His father and other mafia members don’t approve of him choosing loyalty towards his dying mother instead of the mafia. They set him up for a murder he didn’t commit. 17 years later Miles gets released from prison and wants 3 things. Justice, vengeance and his girl. But is the girl he once loved and didn’t hear from in 17 years still his girl? Will he be welcomed with open arms by his family? Who can he trust and who not? Will he get his justice?

I love a mafia book and wanted to love this one too but unfortunately this one didn’t work for me. What I love about mafia books is the suspense and darkness. I missed it in this book. Sure there is some suspense but I would have loved more.

Something that I found rather strange is that usually in mafia books the people cared about are in danger. Miles has a price on his head and instead of making sure Letty and her son are safe, they decide to go on a date. They bring Letty’s son to her father and guess what? They get kidnapped! The part on the kidnapping is rather short but the part on their date is very elaborate.

One big issue for me is that, excluding the epilogue and last Chapter, this book is for only a few days. The first day, the day Miles is released, is written on the first 55% of the book.

Something which was confusing was the constant switching between POV’s. I do love dual POV in books but this book constantly switched between POV’s. Not only for the main 2 characters but also some secondary characters. And additional to that most is written in third person POV but also some first person POV is in between for their thoughts.

I loved Letty and liked how sassy she was but I didn’t feel the chemistry between her and Miles. I also couldn’t really connect with them. There was too much written about secondary characters.

Something I did like was the playlist at the end of the book linked to different scenes.

I don’t like doing this but unfortunately I really didn’t like it and can only give 2 stars to this book. As I said I already have 2 books of this author on my Kindle and will definitely read them some day. The author writes very descriptive, which I like but this book just didn’t work for me but that is my personal opinion. And since all other ratings and reviews are much more positive I guess I’m alone in this so don’t let my review stop you from reading!
